Every year on the second day of February the World Wetlands Day is celebrated. The event aims to spread the knowledge about the importance of these lands to the conservation of the biodiversity and the life in our planet as we know it.
The slogan for the World Wetlands Day 2012 has been ‘Wetlands and Tourism’ as it links to the theme of the very important Conference of the Parties, COP11, which is ‘Wetlands, Tourism and Recreation’. This conference on wetlands is going to take place in Bucharest (Romania) later this year, from 6-13 July.
Wetlands are areas where water is the dominant element, these areas include marshes, swamps, lagoons, bogs and others water soaked and flooded areas which usually support varied vegetation especially adapted to this kind of environment.
